Our Cathedral is a tired beauty, and with every storm a little more is washed away.
As we prepare to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Cathedral in 2022, the Cathedral is undergoing a new stage of urgent and extensive conservation and restoration works.
We pray it will become a place of international pilgrimage as we work together to achieve the Pontifical blessing that will enable Sts Peter and Paul’s Old Cathedral to become Australia’s sixth Basilica.
The First Fleet arrived in Australia and Sydney is founded as a British convict settlement. Catholics are among the convicts and soldiers.
The first land grants were made to free settlers in the Goulburn area.
The first Mass was celebrated in the district by Fr John Therry.
The first stone was laid in Verner Street for a Catholic Church.
The first brick Catholic church was completed and extended over the next 20 years.
The Goulburn diocese was created.
Bishop Lanigan was consecrated in the church, the first Australian Bishop to be consecrated in his own church.
Construction of the Cathedral Nave was commenced, around the original church.
The Nave was completed opened and blessed by Archbishop Polding.
The Cathedral transepts, sanctuary, tower and sacristy were commenced.
The foundation stone of the Cathedral sanctuary was laid by Cardinal Moran on May 15th.
The Cathedral was dedicated by Cardinal Moran on April 25th.
The Cathedral construction was completed, opened and blessed by Cardinal Moran on June 29th.
